Tirgan, the summer solstice (or midsummer) is the longest day and shortest night of the year. People worldwide have celebrated it as a time of growth for centuries, dating back to ancient civilizations. Iranians celebrate this day on the 13th day Tir (first month of summer) with such activities as Aab-Pashi (splashing water), special cuisines like Ash-e Reshteh (spinach soup) and Sholeh Zard (yellow rice pudding), and poetry, dance, and rainbow-color wristbands.
Legend has it that it was on this day when a long dispute between the two countries of Iran and Touran was settled. Touran was suffering a long-lasting drought. Iran was suffering a disastrous defeat. To add insult to injury, the victorious Turan proclaimed the border is to be set by an arrow shot from highest peak of the volcano mountain, Damavand. Arash the Archer, put his soul into the arrow and sought the help of Tishtrya, the deity of rain, thunder and lightning. The arrow traveled for two days and settled far inside Touran land, rain poured onto both countries, and peace was formed between them.
